Nurture Entrepreneurship Inside Your Company to Fuel Growth

Last year, memoryBlue stood at the crossroads between staying small and growing. On one hand, Marc and I could oversee everything, maintain a 20-30 person boutique and simply “rinse and repeat” our model.  On the other hand, we could scale the business.

This was not a decision that we took lightly. First, we hired a Harvard MBA ex-CFO to construct a variety of financial scenarios. Next, we flew down to Dallas to spend two days with Kaye/Bassman, the largest single site search firm in North America, who graciously offered  to show us how they built their firm into an empire.

After conducting our due diligence and some serious soul searching, Marc and I both decided that scaling was the best and most exhilarating option.

Jeff Kaye is the CEO of the Dallas-based search firm.  I vividly remember him sharing with us one of the most critical factors to his firm’s growth and continued success, “Look at your company and ask yourself the following question: ‘Is there a career path within my firm that I wish existed when I first went out on my own?'”

At memoryBlue, there wasn’t. How ironic that Marc and I were fast tracking people into the same high tech sales industry that we ourselves left to start our own business? Granted, the overwhelming majority of people we hire want a jumpstart into high tech sales profession, but what if we were fortunate enough to have someone on the team with entrepreneurial aspirations?  Where was the path for the “junior” version of Marc and me?

A New Era of Entrepreneurship at memoryBlue

Today we’re committed to creating the entrepreneurial opportunity that we wished existed 10 years ago when we chose to leave field sales positions with high tech companies.  Our vision is to develop a business opportunity that offers unlimited earning potential and equity, *plus* the resources to maximize the likelihood of success over a much shorter time horizon: funding through a guaranteed minimum income, infrastructure, brand recognition and marketing support, referenceable clients, and more. Essentially, we want to help people build their own businesses within the four walls of memoryBlue.

Looking back, Marc and I would have been able to accelerate into field sales positions faster if a company like memoryBlue existed when we first graduated from college.  In a couple of short years, we want to say that memoryBlue is also a catalyst to entrepreneurial success. It’s thrilling that a few of our people have already bought into this vision and have started their own odyssey in building their own businesses.  Watching people come in each and every day to passionately contribute to something they own is inspiring.  Best of all, this entrepreneurial electricity fuels our growth, is great for our culture, and is something we hope is contagious.
